Views from Within Artist Statement
In my series Views from Within, I explore the way memories and generations of family overlap to influence personal identity, beliefs, and cultural values. I often combine my photographs with snapshots and images from family albums in order to reconstruct the past, to better understand the present. The subtle layers of information within each print are intended to express the way memory and generations overlap, as well as the textural complexity of representation and perception. Characterized by nostalgia, family, spirituality, and figurative metaphor, Views from Within is a series motivated by hidden voices reminding me that countless personalities have become mingled with my own, that memory is often veiled, and that reality lies in both the past and present. In essence, they are the voices of contradiction and reason that resonate in my mind.
